This photo would have been taken in the mid sixties in front of the new clubhouse. I will guess that that is the Commodore raising the triangular R flag. There is another photo that shows a large Canadian flag that was also flying on that pole.

Late in 1963 a building appropriate for use as a club house was found and a plan to acquire it was put in place.

A temporary office for the Toronto Dominion bank was available and the club raised the funds in part by selling shares to members. In the previous 3 years the membership had more than doubled to almost 200.

The share paid off by paying part of the membership fees over the next 7 years.

An extensive report on the state of the Red River and what should be done for its redevelopment within the city of Winnipeg was written in 1960 by T. Atkinson from the U of M school of architecture. A copy of the full report is still kept by our club. In the report there are descriptions of all the existing features along the river including this paragraph about the Redboine Boat Club.

Today we share the typed minutes from a meeting at what was most likely a cold day in February of 1956. It would be a while before the club procured a clubhouse of their own own so these meetings were held at the St. Vital hotel. I like the details of the raffle and the signatures of the President and Secretary.

The precursor to our boating club that was mentioned in the last blog was the Greater Winnipeg Boating Association that was formed in the early fifties. A poster advertising for memberships at 3$ per year has been saved and is shown below. The large lettered RIVER FILTH attracts your attention, how was it not more successful?

Welcome to midwinter. For the enjoyment of members and to possibly encourage new members to join there will be the occasional post coming to share some of the artifacts that have been preserved concerning the history of the club.

Today the item to be shared is a typed one page history of the club that was written some time after 1964.

With record rainfall in September the waters of the Red River have risen to the point where it was dangerous to have our boats attached to the rising docks, so the boating season came to an abrupt end last week. Thank you to all members who helped out and got their boats out of the water on short notice.

The Club is offering docking only until the season end, which is scheduled for the weekend of October 6th.  All boats, including members boats will have to have to be out by then.  This special will cost $100.00.

  • Once they have paid the fee, they will be given a code for the keypad that operates the entrance gate.
  • Any gas purchased will be paid with cash or credit card at the time of purchase.
  • Trailer storage and clubhouse access are not included as part of the offer.

We are Winnipeg's family on the river entertainment club. Dock your boat with us, and visit The Forks, Pony Corral Pier 7 or St. Vital Park. Head up to Lockport for a hotdog, tour miles and miles of beautiful sites, or have your own cruise under the stars. Go fishing for the big cats at Lockport, or head right out to Gimli for the weekend.
